Activated Clay

Activated Clay, also known as Bentonite or Montmorillonite Clay, is mainly used to adsorb water vapour and control moisture. The dehydrating Activated Clay is presented in slightly more coarse granules than silica gel and is inserted in the identical sachets of standard material. Activated Clay desiccant is a naturally occurring porous mineral that is dried and processed to enhance its moisture adsorption capacity, allowing it to absorb up to 25% of its weight in moisture. The desiccant is a natural adsorbent material to control the relative humidity level inside the packaging. Even though the term “activated clay” can suggest treatment with chemical additives, the Clay (or bentonite) does not come into contact with any substance throughout the processing phase.

Bentonite is extracted from the quarry and ground into granules. Subsequently, the granules are dried in furnaces to eliminate any remaining moisture. In temperatures exceeding 50°C, the adsorbed moisture will be discharged back to the environment, allowing users to efficiently dry off and reuse saturated (full) Activated Clay. However, this also means that Activated Clay desiccant is unsuitable for high-temperature applications over 50°C. As bentonite sachets can also produce a fine brown-grey powder that is potentially abrasive, they should not be used with delicate optical devices such as cameras, video cameras, binoculars, microscopes, or delicate materials.

Stream Peak’s Humi Dri Activated Clay is safe, odourless, chemically inert, non-corrosive, and non-toxic. The desiccant’s physical shape does not change when saturated with water. This moisture-absorbing solution is less costly and more effective than other chemically produced desiccants and functions within the average temperature and relative humidity (RH) ranges. Since Activated Clay is a 100% natural material, it may be disposed of simply by dispersing it in the environment after extracting it from its casing which must be discarded in the common garbage. Activated Clay Desiccant can also be scattered in the garden or used as pet litter.
