Activated Carbon
An excellent adsorbent, Activated Carbon (also known as Activated Coal, Activated Charcoal, Activated Carbon, Activated Coal, or Active Charcoal) is a highly porous substance that purifies water, air, and gases, as well as removes unstable and odour particles. They control moisture and humidity and prevent mould, mildew, and other damage by absorbing moisture effectively.
With a large surface area of 800 to 1,200m² per gram, Activated Carbon is a cost-effective way to treat large volumes of gas or water with a low concentration of contaminants. Their ability to separate gases and liquids makes them excellent adsorbents for highly effective adsorbing results. The amount of adsorption is entirely dependent on the material being adsorbed. However, it is perfect for removing odours from various industrial applications where packaging products may cause a foul smell and an unpleasant feeling when opened. The Activated Carbon, made from natural coconut shells, can be used in food production and industrial processes.
To obtain a more effective adsorption outcome, activated carbon desiccant packets can be mixed with silica gel packets, which significantly increase the ability to control odour and moisture. Furthermore, this desiccant can quickly adsorb toxic compounds and water vapours using carbon molecules.
Application
Gas Purification
Activated Carbon is usually used in compressed air and gas purification to remove hydrocarbons from the air. The large charcoal beds adsorb these gases and retain them as they rapidly decay. The solids are trapped in the charcoal particles while the filtered air passes.
Chemical Purification
Activated Carbon is used to purify solutions of organic molecules containing unwanted impurities. Large-scale chemical and pharmaceutical processes use filtration over Carbon for the same purpose. The Carbon is mixed with the solution and then filtered off or with the filter.
Environmental
Activated Carbon has many applications in removing pollutants from air and water streams on the field and in industrial processes such as air purification and drinking water filtration. It is effective in water treatment as Carbon is multi-functional in nature.
