Activated alumina is a desiccant made of solid aluminium oxide in porous sphere form, which is the same material found in precious stones like ruby and sapphire.

High Adsorption Capability

The desiccant has a high adsorption capability, making it ideal for heavy industrial applications such as catalyst adsorption and chemical removal without altering the structure of the substances.

Activated alumina is also useful for drinking water purification by removing harmful chemicals like fluoride, arsenic, and selenium. Its robustness makes it suitable for high-pressure applications.

Activated alumina and molecular sieves are two common desiccants with different pore sizes, enabling them to separate molecules or substances based on size. In contrast, activated alumina has a higher water adsorption capacity than molecular sieves, perfect for drying gases, liquids, and streams with high moisture levels.

Low Dew Point Control

The desiccant’s high water adsorption capacity, mechanical strength, and shallow attrition loss make it possible to achieve a dew point of at least -40°C, and sometimes even -70°C or better under high pressure. Contact us for bulk quantities, custom sizes, or special printing requirements.

Catalyst 

Activated alumina can be used as a catalyst adsorbent in polyethene and hydrogen peroxide production. It is also a selective adsorbent to remove arsenic, fluoride, and sulfur from gas streams in the Claus Catalyst process.

Fluoride Adsorbent 

Activated alumina can efficiently reduce fluoride levels from 10.0 ppm (parts per million) to less than 1.0 ppm to remove fluoride from drinking water. The amount of fluoride removed from the filtered water depends on how long the water remains in contact with the alumina filter media. The amount of fluoride left in the filtered water decreases with increased alumina. Lowering the water’s temperature and pH level can improve filtering effectiveness. The ideal pH level for effective fluoride removal is 5.5, achieving up to a 95% removal rate.

Vacuum Systems 

In fore-line traps, the desiccant acts as a charge material that prevents oil generated by rotary vane pumps from backstreaming into the system. Additionally, activated alumina can be regenerated by exposing it to moisture over a long period at high temperatures. To restore the adsorbent to its full adsorptive capacity, heat it to 150°C – 180°C. The higher the regeneration temperature, the longer the operating cycle and the lower the exit dew point of the gas. It’s essential to keep the adsorbent from being exposed to temperatures above 350°C to maintain its performance over an extended period.
